Adventure Has No Off-Season: School Trips All Year Round

There’s a bit of a myth that school adventure trips are just for summer but some of the best trips happen across the entire year, each season bringing something different to the experience.
Here at Acorn Adventure, we make it clear that “adventure” doesn’t switch off when the temperature drops. It just shifts gear.

Autumn Trips

Autumn is one of the most underrated times to travel. Centres are quieter, the landscapes change colour, and students tend to be more focused without the end-of-term buzz. It’s ideal for team building and settling new groups, especially for transition years. Activities like orienteering and problem-solving challenges really come into their own here.

Winter Trips

Winter trips might not be the obvious choice, but they offer something completely different. Centres will tend to be quieter and activities such as indoor climbing, bushcraft and leadership tasks often feel more immersive when the weather adds a bit of challenge.

Spring Trips

Spring is when all activities become accessible again. It’s a great balance, longer days, improving weather, and a chance to get students outside before exams take over. This is when you can mix land and water activities more freely, from kayaking and raft building to high ropes and climbing. It’s also a popular time for curriculum-linked trips, where outdoor learning feels more engaging.

Summer Trips

Summer is the classic time for school trips. Longer days mean packed itineraries, and centres are in full swing. Coastal locations really shine here, with activities like coasteering and surfing offering a high-energy experience that students remember long after they’re back in the classroom.

What ties it all together is flexibility. Trips are built around the time of year, not restricted by it. Whether it’s adapting activities, making the most of the environment, or simply changing the pace, there’s always a way to make it work.

If you’re looking ahead, it’s worth thinking beyond the usual windows. The right trip at the right time of year can completely change how students engage, build confidence and connect as a group.
