Why Acorn is a #BrilliantResidential

As part of the big `Learning Away` campaign for #brilliant residentials, sixty schools have been asked what makes a brilliant residential? Over 35 years, Acorn has been working closely with teachers to ensure we are always delivering #brilliantresidentials and we get some amazing feedback every year. Here’s how we deliver on what these sixty schools tell us makes a #brilliantresidential:

1.Fully integrated with the school curriculum and ethos

Teachers regularly tell us that our trips exceed expectations when it comes to enhancing the school curriculum and their objectives of the trip, which are closely aligned with the school curriculum and ethos. Some of these have included: confidence building, team-building, end of year reward, outdoor activities experience, fun (together to enhance relationships and improve pupil/teacher interaction in the classroom).

2.Designed and led by teachers, and where appropriate, students.

There are many small trips that schools can do in-house and we think it’s great for teacher and students to do this. Where we come in is to help teachers and students seeking a specialist trip, with qualified instructors delivering activities and experiences that can’t be done by teachers and students. Booking with us also comes with the benefit of our transport expertise- we have a long list of excellent coach suppliers that all conform to stringent STF audit guidelines. With so much choice on offer, teachers and students are still very much leading the process when they book with us and our trips are often adapted to meet school and student objectives.

 3.Inclusive and affordable for students

Why do many teachers choose Acorn initially? Because our prices are amazing and very competitive, especially when you consider the content rich programmes on offer. Why do they return? Because we are such good value. It’s not just about the very affordable prices, but about what we deliver. And we often exceed expectations and therefore see a huge number of teachers returning year after year.

Why your school should travel to Normandy with Acorn next summer...

From the Norman invasion of England in 1066 to the D-Day landings of 1944, Normandy has played an important role in European history. With its spectacular monastery, Mont St-Michel; the Bayeux Tapestry, D-Day beaches, war memorials, magnificent rugged coastline and cultural charm, it's clear to see why many UK schools travel to Normandy every year.

Our well-established, private Acorn Adventure centre is located in Hauteville-sur-Mer, in the Manche, Normandy region in Northern France. Set in a traditional seaside town, minutes away from a long sandy beach, we are just 67km from Mont St Michel and 78km from Bayeux and so are ideally located for school residential trips in this area. Our market-leading 4-6 night Normandy residential programmes combine the most popular adventurous activities (rock-climbing, kayaking, high ropes & more) with all the popular school visits such as Mont St Michel, Bayeux Tapestry, Goats Cheese Farm, Arromanches 360 cinema and D Day Landing Beaches.

Ofsted's view of Learning Outside the Classroom

Acorn values it's membership of the LOtC, which actively promotes, encourages and supports the use of places other than the classroom for teaching and learning. School trips are a great way to achieve this and there are lots of other ways too. The LOtC website is a useful platform to gain ideas to help you with this and they have also produced some interesting information about Ofsted's views about LOtC, which you may find interesting:

Ofsted has produced a range of documents and case studies to demonstrate the importance of LOtC, and to support schools to develop LOtC opportunities for their pupils. A key document is the 2008 report Learning outside the classroom: How far should you go? This is a survey of a range of schools and educational establishments which examines LOtC in practice, and highlights what schools are doing well and where there is room for improvement. Key findings of the report include:

Feedback from some happy campers!

We love hearing from our groups about their trips with us and are getting some lovely feedback through this season. Here is a lovely email we received today from a Scout Group who have recently returned from an adventure trip in the Brecon Beacons.

"Good evening Acorn Adventure

On behalf of Christ Church Scout Groups Cubs and Scouts, I would like to say a big THANK YOU for the weeks camping and activity experience last week.

I have have received several texts from parents stating what a "WOW" and "FAB" time the Cubs and Scouts had.

Our trips through the children's eyes

Today we got some wonderful letters through the post. Letters written by a group of primary school children who have recently returned from a trip to our Brecon Beacons Adventure in Wales.

It's so wonderful to hear about our trips directly from the children that we thought we would share a few of their words with you (just a small selection of comments- there were so many, it was hard to choose).

It reminds us all why we do what we do and why our trips are so important.

“I recommend you as a confidence boost scheme. You taught me to be brave”

“My favourite song was the toast song. I would like to thank Tom, Abby, Connor and Oscar for making our time funny and awesome.”

“I thoroughly enjoyed rounders, especially when the staff joined in, and the songs you taught us were brilliant!”
